If we see it carefully, the first part of Jesus’ teaching talks about the hierarchy of a prayer. While the Catechism recalls that: “There is a hierarchy in these petitions: we pray first for the Kingdom, then for what is necessary to welcome it and cooperate with its coming” (n. 2632). But extraordinarily, Jesus gives us the courage to ask for our basic needs, our “daily bread.” We are also encouraged to ask for “simple gifts” [Pope Francis, December 9, 2020]. Jesus realized that asking for extraordinary things may make us feel strange, unworthy, or uncomfortable. Therefore, he asks us to recognize our relationship with God first by saying, “Our Father.” It creates the closeness and bonds between us and God, Our Father.

Jesus gives us tips to chase our faith in prayer to fulfill our needs for both liturgical and simple prayer. In Lk 11:9, Jesus says, “And I tell you, ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened for you.” There are three keywords: ASK, SEEK and KNOCK. These acts must have some background:

According to God’s will [1 Jn 5:14-15]; Trusting in God’s Great Mercy [Dan 9:18]; In the name of Jesus Christ [Jn 14:13]; In faith, “And whatever you ask in prayer, if you* believe, you will receive.” [Mt 21:22].

Jesus secures his words by concluding, “For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” [Lk 11:10].

So, let us put ourselves in front of God as his children, sinners, and those in need. Because “asking” means requesting other things, it is an expression of dependence like a child who always depends on their parents. And if someone never asks, they are independent, at a distance, and far from God’s grace. Pope Francis encourages us not to be ashamed to ask something to God, our Father: “Therefore, we should not be shocked if we feel the need to pray, we should not be ashamed. And, especially when we are in need, to ask.” [Francis, Catechesis on prayer – 18. The prayer of petition, December 9, 2020]

Salam Misioner
RDHJ

______________
XVII Sunday of Ordinary Time
July 23-24, 2022
Lk 11, 1-13

"Ebbene, io vi dico: chiedete e vi sarà dato, cercate e troverete, bussate e vi sarà aperto. 10Perché chiunque chiede riceve e chi cerca trova e a chi bussa sarà aperto."
Lc 11:9-10

Fratelli e sorelle,

" [Lc 11,10].

Quindi, mettiamoci davanti a Dio come suoi figli, peccatori e bisognosi.

[Francis, Catechesis on prayer - 18.
