“You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.” <\/em><\/p>Lk 10:27-28<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
My dearest brothers and sisters, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interestingly, today’s Gospel describes an essential question of human life according to faith: eternal life. It starts with the conversation between Jesus and a law expert with a question: “Teacher, what must I do so that I will inherit eternal life?”<\/em><\/strong> [Lk 10,25] Knowing it was a trapped question, Jesus replied to him precisely with his background’s logic about loving God and loving your neighbor. He said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”<\/em><\/strong> [Lk 10,28] The next question follows their conversation: “And who is my neighbor?” <\/strong>[v. 29] The question still echoes our existence, daily life, relationship, and our culture of encounters today. And why did Jesus take an example of a Samaritan as a good one? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The word “neighbor,” in the society of Jesus’ time, usually meant those closed geographically [Gen 11,3; Prov 3,29]. It was also translated as “friend” or “another.” “Neighbor” is those who belong to us [our group or race]. Consequently, we could only give our help to those people. Samaritans were looked down upon and considered impure by some Jews of that time. Therefore, they were not among those to be helped. On the contrary, that impure Samaritan who is the first to move by approaching a wounded Judean and making himself present and available as a neighbor and a friend; indeed as a brother. It changes our way of relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regarding Fratelli Tutti,<\/em> Pope Francis urges that “Jesus, himself a Jew, completely transforms this approach. He asks us not to decide who is close enough to be our neighbor but instead that we become neighbors to all.” [FT 80]<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, the neighborhood is more than knowing who is nearest to us physically; but needs to be closed, presented, and available to those in need. We have to create that approach. That is our personal decision to respond to Jesus’ words: “You go and do likewise.” [Lk 10, 37]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carissimi fratelli e sorelle,
\u00c8 interessante notare che il Vangelo di oggi descrive una questione essenziale della vita umana secondo la fede: la vita eterna. Inizia con la conversazione tra Ges\u00f9 e un esperto della legge con una domanda: “Maestro, che cosa devo fare per ereditare la vita eterna?” [Lc 10,25]. Sapendo che si trattava di una domanda trappola, Ges\u00f9 gli rispose proprio con la logica della sua formazione sull’amare Dio e amare il prossimo. Gli disse: “Hai risposto bene; fa’ questo e vivrai”. [Lc 10,28] La domanda successiva segue la loro conversazione: “E chi \u00e8 il mio prossimo?” [v. 29] Questa domanda riecheggia ancora oggi nella nostra esistenza, nella vita quotidiana, nelle relazioni e nella nostra cultura dell’incontro. E perch\u00e9 Ges\u00f9 ha preso l’esempio di un buon samaritano?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
La parola “prossimo”, nella societ\u00e0 del tempo di Ges\u00f9, indicava di solito le persone vicine geograficamente [Gen 11,3; Prov 3,29]. Era anche tradotta come “amico” o “altro”. Il “prossimo” \u00e8 chi appartiene a noi [al nostro gruppo o alla nostra razza]. Di conseguenza, potevamo dare il nostro aiuto solo a queste persone. I samaritani erano guardati dall’alto in basso e considerati impuri da alcuni ebrei dell’epoca. Pertanto, non erano tra coloro che dovevano essere aiutati. Al contrario, quel samaritano impuro che si muove per primo avvicinandosi a un giudeo ferito e rendendosi presente e disponibile come un vicino e un amico; oltre \u00e8 un fratello. Questa \u00e8 una cosa che cambia il nostro modo di relazionarci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Riguarda quest’essempio di buon Samaritano, Papa Francesco esorta che “Il giudeo Ges\u00f9 rovescia completamente questa impostazione: non ci chiama a domandarci chi sono quelli vicini a noi, bens\u00ec a farci noi vicini, prossimi.” [Fratelli Tutti 80]<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Quindi, la prossimit\u00e0 non \u00e8 solo sapere chi \u00e8 pi\u00f9 vicino a noi fisicamente, ma deve essere chiuso, presentato e disponibile per chi ha bisogno. Dobbiamo creare questo approccio – questa nuova impostazione. Sarebbe la nostra decisione personale di rispondere alle parole di Ges\u00f9: “Va’ e anche tu fa’ cos\u00ec”. [Lc 10, 37]<\/p>\n\n\n\n
